Alumni and Job Placement

Graduate Student Placement

WSU’s Department of English is committed to supporting its graduate students throughout their training and job search. Mentors and program directors, including our job placement faculty, work closely with students to identify their particular career interests—academic and non-academic—and develop an effective, comprehensive set of application materials (CVs, letters, teaching portfolios). We also provide additional funding for students traveling to job interviews and regularly conduct mock interviews to help students prepare. We most recently partnered with Gonzaga University in Spokane to help our students better understand teaching at a small, liberal arts college.

All of this work has helped our students achieve a full-time academic placement rate of over 90%, nearly double the national average. We also welcome students wishing to consider work outside the higher-education setting, where we have had success as well.

While many programs will provide only a selective snapshot of their placement record, our department is committed to providing comprehensive, transparent information for prospective students. Listed below are the initial search outcomes for all of our PhDs over the past five years, with more to be added as this page develops.
