The poems, stories, essays, and even music they present are often deeply personal and sometimes political. Open Mic is open to the public and happens once or twice monthly. <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/z5v1RRldAIA\">Watch the English student-produced video.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Passport Program cultivates world citizens<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"292\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3225\/2019\/06\/passport_guy-1.jpg\" alt=\"A young man gestures as he speaks.\" class=\"wp-image-340\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Creating a space for students to become their best selves is the goal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/provost.wsu.edu\/2018\/01\/29\/program-offers-students-a-passport-to-success\/\">Passport<\/a> professional development and mentoring program. LeeAnn Hunter, clinical associate professor of English and self-described &#8220;artist, educator, and cultivator of citizens of the world,&#8221; designed the program to foster more direct professor\u2013student interactions over multiple semesters, encouraging students to follow their own paths and to develop their voices so they are recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Students who feel supported, and who have a faculty member who believes in them and cares about them and their dreams, are twice as likely to report long-term professional well-being,&#8221; Hunter says.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nrOMyke8_PQ\">Watch the English student-produced video on YouTube.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Writer Series brings notable guests to campus<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"180\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3225\/2019\/06\/VWR-color-logo-new.jpg\" alt=\"WSU English Dept. Founded by alumnae Stephanie Lenox and H.K. Hummel, <em>BOR<\/em>&#8216;s inaugural issue appeared online in 2006. It now receives hundreds of monthly submissions from national and international writers. The first 30 issues contain work by more than 200 writers and artists from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinical Assistant Professor of English Bryan Fry joined the editorial team in 2008 and established a student internship, which enables the journal to serve as an educational tool for students interested in editing and publishing. <em>BOR<\/em> interns and students in the English department&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/english.wsu.edu\/creative-writing\/editing-and-publishing-certificate\/\">editing and publishing track<\/a>&nbsp;learn hands-on about the editorial process\u2014from selecting work to reading proofs and editing for consistency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The founders transferred the journal\u2019s editorial operations to WSU in 2015 and continue to serve in an advisory capacity. <em>BOR<\/em>\u00a0strives to carry out their original mission: \u201cto create a home for emerging and established writers.\u201d\u00a0With the transition, <em>Blood Orange Review<\/em> sustains the support of WSU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/bloodorangereview.com\/masthead\/\">creative writing faculty<\/a>, which includes 10 accomplished writers and editors. Fry currently serves as editor-in-chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Blood Orange Review&#8217;s<\/em> inaugural literary contest this spring honored winners in each of three genres\u2014fiction, nonfiction, and poetry\u2014with awards of $500 each and publication of the authors&#8217; work in the journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduate journal\u00a0<em>LandEscapes<\/em> strives to publish unique pieces that &#8216;challenge the stigma&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"138\" height=\"135\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3225\/2019\/06\/LandEscapes_logo.jpg\" alt=\"LandEscapes logo.\" class=\"wp-image-260\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p> &#8220;A creative outlet for WSU students, a high-cultured flyswatter, a mag, a rag, late for dinner\u2014call it anything you want. <em>LandEscapes<\/em> belongs to WSU. A gift.\u201d This was how the late <a href=\"http:\/\/english.wsu.edu\/newsletter\/in-memoriam\/\">Boyd Benson<\/a>, founding editor of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/landescapes.wsu.edu\/\">LandEscapes<\/a><\/em>, described it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each step of the journal&#8217;s publication process\u2014from advertising to reviewing submissions to layouts and distribution\u2014is run entirely by students from a variety of personal and academic backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Editor this year is Madison Jackson, former editor of WSU&#8217;s student-run newspaper <em>The Daily Evergreen. <\/em>In April, the print version of <em>LandEscapes<\/em> 2019 was launched with a celebration at WSU Pullman, featuring readings by students and ice cream from Ferdinand\u2019s Creamery.
