Below is just a sampling of our graduate students&#8217; many activities and interests.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-557\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"218\" height=\"218\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3225\/2019\/06\/velasco_tabitha.jpg\" alt=\"Tabitha Espina Velasco.\" class=\"wp-image-557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3225\/2019\/06\/velasco_tabitha.jpg 218w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3225\/2019\/06\/velasco_tabitha-198x198.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tabitha Espina Velasco<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>An article by <strong>Tabitha Espina Velasco<\/strong>, doctoral candidate, titled \u201cEngaging Existing and Emergent Experiences: Narratives among Young Filipinas on Guam,\u201d was published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/soundideas.pugetsound.edu\/rpj\/vol3\/iss2\/2\/\">Race and Pedagogy Journal<\/a>: Teaching and Learning for Justice<\/em> vol. 3.2. Velasco also presented as part of the \u201cAsian (American) Settler Colonialism on Gu\u00e5han: Migration, Labor, War\u201d panel at the 2019 Association for Asian American Studies Annual Conference in Madison, Wisconsin. In addition, she presented her paper \u201cThe Halo Halo Generation: Rhetorics of Third-Generation Filipino Identity on Guam\u201d at the International Society for the Study of Narrative Conference 2019, hosted by Georgetown University and University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. While there, she also chaired the \u201cRace, Identity, and Narrative\u201d panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Velasco was awarded the 2019 Karen P. Depauw Leadership Award from the WSU Association for Faculty Women and the Graduate School; the Avery Dissertation Fellowship in English; and the Laura Bassi Scholarship Partial Fee Waiver for 2018-19. She also was a named a Graduate Fellow for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanities.org\/about-us\/our-staff-and-board\/\">Humanities Washington<\/a>. As part of the NextGen PhD grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, she will be working with Humanities Washington as a Publicly Engaged Fellow to help identify obstacles between the humanities and underrepresented communities, such as the Filipino immigrant community in Yakima.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-574\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"210\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3225\/2019\/06\/padilla_jessie2.jpg\" alt=\"Jessie Padilla.\" class=\"wp-image-574\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jessie Padilla<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Jessie Padilla<\/strong>, master&#8217;s student, performed her spoken-word poem \u201cThis Was Supposed to Be\u201d at <em>Project Fearless: Shattering the Stigma of Sexual Violence, <\/em>a night of art and performance at WSU. Her poem brings awareness to the lifelong impact of childhood sexual assault through a mother&#8217;s perspective. Project Fearless is sponsored by the Associated Students of WSU and was created to help shatter the stigma of sexual violence through performance and art.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-558\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"198\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3225\/2019\/06\/triana_mark.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Triana.\" class=\"wp-image-558\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mark Triana<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark Triana<\/strong>, doctoral candidate, and Anna Plemons, clinical assistant professor of English, collaborated with campus partners of the Critical Literacies Achievement and Success Program (CLASP) from the College Success Foundation and Multicultural Student Services on the article \u201cCrossing the Divide: How Department Chairs Can Better Support Underrepresented Students Through Institutional Collaboration\u201d published in <em>The Department Chair<\/em> in January.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-576\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"170\" height=\"171\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/wp-cas\/uploads\/sites\/3225\/2019\/06\/wilson_leah-1.jpg\" alt=\"Leah Wilson.\" class=\"wp-image-576\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Leah Wilson<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Leah Wilson<\/strong>, doctoral candidate, presented her paper \u201cApocalypse, Now!: Surviving the Pharmacopornographic Era by Imagining Queer Futures in Michelle Tea\u2019s Black Wave\u201d at the National Women&#8217;s Studies Association Conference, <em>Just Imagine, Imagining Justice: Feminist Visions of Freedom, Dream Making and the Radical Politics of Futures<\/em> in Atlanta. At the same conference, Wilson also participated in a roundtable, \u201cReimagining Women\u2019s and Gender Studies Education: Just Pedagogical Choices for an Unjust World.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-column gray wsu-color-background--gray-5\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did you know?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our graduate program boasts a placement rate for PhDs of over 90%, which is nearly double the national average.
