Highlights & Summary of the Program
In Ireland, people, places, history, and culture are steeped in poetry. On this program, we’ll travel across Ireland, meeting with poets and local people along the way to speak with them about poetry. We’ll visit notable cultural, environmental, and historical sites in Dublin, Clare, Galway, Donegal, Derry, Belfast, and Monaghan, and consider the places we visit through the lens of the Irish poem. We’ll think about what makes a poem “Irish”—and we’ll think about whether such a thing as an “Irish poem” even exists, or even needs to be named such. We’ll write our own poems, we’ll journal, and we’ll analyze poems by poets we meet, looking at them in a global, historical, and cultural context.
