MA Portfolio Checklist, Rhetoric and Composition

32 Credit-Hour Minimum: 28 graded credit hours; 4 non-graded credit hours

This checklist does not substitute for a conversation and guidance from your committee chair and the Director of Graduate Studies.

I.  Graded Courses [28 credits]

A. Foundations

  • ENGL 501: Seminar in the Methodology of Composition [3 credits]
  • ENGL 502: Contemporary Theories of Composition [3 credits]
  • ENGL 512: Introduction to Graduate Studies [1 credit]

B. Rhetoric and Composition Electives [9 credits]

Choose from the following:

  • ENGL 508: Seminar in Assessment of Writing
  • ENGL 509: Seminar in the History of Global Rhetorics
  • ENGL 515: Contemporary Theories of Rhetoric
  • ENGL 531: Administering a Writing Program
  • ENGL 532: Teaching Writing to Nontraditional Students
  • ENGL 597: Topics in Composition and Rhetoric

C. Linguistics [3 credits]

Choose from the following:

  • ENGL 543: Phonology
  • ENGL 544: Syntax
  • ENGL 546: Topics in Teaching English as a Second Language
  • ENGL 554: History of the English Language

D. General Electives [9 credits]

  • Any 500-level English course (ENGL 545 may only be taken once for credit)
  • 500-level courses outside of English (upon approval from committee chair and/or DGS)
  • Three credits of a 400-level course in or outside of English (upon approval from committee chair and/or DGS)

II.  Non-Graded Courses [4 credits minimum]

  • ENGL 702 Research, Thesis, and/or Exam [1 credit per semester]
